BIM to BEM

automatically conversion of complex buildings

This research is included in the program of the 13th Five-Year Project of China – Research and development of key technologies for operation optimization of the green building based on BIM.

BIM to BEM part is featured as:

  • Check and modify the original BIM and the intermediate file (gbXML) to ensure the success of the BIM to BEM (Building Energy Modelling) transmission.

  • Convert BIM to BEM automatically based on gbXML.

  • Enrich the BEM converted from BIM by using an external database.

The biggest obstacle of transmitting BIM to BEM is the deviation of geometrical information. The main reasons for the unsuccessful conversion of BIM to BEM can be classified into two aspects: the error or deviation of information raised by the original BIM, the deviation of information between BIM and gbXML.

The proposed method is more robust and automatic. The BIM checker module checks and modifies the original BIM to reduce the deviation of information, the gbXML editor module simplifies and corrects the gbXML to make sure the success of conversion and quality of BEM, and IDF booster module checks the validity of information and adds essential information to BEM automatically. As tested, the complicated BIM which can’t be converted by GBS or other tools can be transformed to the reliable BEM through the proposed method.

The BIM checker module develops plug-ins of Revit which refine essential geometrical information, add or correct spatial information in BIM, and reconstruct the geometry in a thermal view. The BIM checker module and gbXML module ensure the quality of geometrical information and eliminate the obstacles of converting complex BIM to BEM.
